can you say dirndl?

A dirndl is a type of traditional dress worn in southern Germany, Liechtenstein and Austria, based on the historical costume of Alpine peasants.

I recently found the sweetest vintage combo: a floral dirndl dress and a matching jacket, hence the definition above. I must say I am not a big enthusiast of this new floral trend, but this dress was way too sweet to pass up. plus the flowers are really small and subtle. after bringing them home I got to thinking a bit about the whole vintage issue. first of all, there aren't really any vintage stores around my area, and I only stumble upon real vintage pieces on rare occasions. most of the times the sizes are way too big for me, their condition is less than acceptable and the fabrics are quite low on quality. and, to be frank, sometimes they're just plain ugly. don't get me wrong, I LOVE vintage, but nevertheless I do not think vintage is for everybody. the loveliest vintage piece could look all weird on the wrong person or, if not carefully accessorized it can look tacky or outdated. what I love most about vintage is the story they carry with them and the warm fuzzy felling you get when wearing them. not only they are a very welcomed solution for a girl on a budget like me, but also they are unique pieces that you know you will treasure forever. wearing vintage was such an underground thing, but now it seems like everyone is wearing vintage. I guess that happens to all trends, it's only a matter of time until everyone starts wearing them. we all strive to be unique and then end up looking all the same.
coming back to my recent finds, although I wore the ensemble once, I intend to alter the dress a bit to make it look a bit better before I present it to you properly. personally I do not think this over the knee length looks good on me, so I am going to shorten it a couple of centimeters. then, although I might try one day to wear it as it is, I plan of wearing it front to back most of the times. the low cut neckline calls for a blouse underneath, but I fear that would just make me look like I am about to go to oktoberfest. I don't want to take this quite literally and look all costume-y. and the best part is the jacket stands great on it's own and can be worn with jeans and a simple tank top. I cannot tell you how happy I am with these finds, and cannot wait to showcase them as soon as the dress is altered.
